Welcome!

It's hard to believe it's September already, and most kids have already headed back to school. Well this month is National Preparedness Month according to the Dept. of Homeland Security's website, so I've decided to dedicate this newsletter to that subject. It's a subject I feel really strong about. We are only half way through the hurricane season this year and there has been all kinds of devastating weather throughout the nation already.

I've included three articles to help everyone take some small steps to help insure they will be better off in case of an emergency. Also, here a 2 useful sites that discuss Emergency Preparedness:

Household Inventory Booklet

Have a wonderful month!

Is Your House Ready
for Anything?

If you were stuck in your home due to a snow storm, ice storm, or worse a biological or chemical attack - how long would you be able to survive without going out to a grocery store?

Do you have a pantry full of supplies? Do you think it needs to cost a small fortune to fill a pantry? Well, think again! Here are a couple tips to help you find the space for a pantry and fill it inexpensively.

Location, Location, Location
Think you don't have any space available? Consider clearing a shelf or part of a shelf in a closet. Perhaps in a guest bedroom. Another option is purchasing a storage tote and store it in your garage, attic or any place it will fit. If you are seriously low on available space find a box that will fit under your bed. There are even risers available to make your bed higher off the floor, so that a box or under-the-bed storage container will fit.

What to Stock Up On
It's important to consider what you actually put in your pantry. Some suggestions are:

  • canned or packed meats (tuna, chicken, salmon, etc.),

  • canned veggies and fruits (corn, beans, pears, peaches, etc.),

  • soups

  • bottled water - the government recommends at least a 3 day supply (1 gallon per person per day)

  • manual can opener

  • battery powered radio or television

  • diapers and wipes (for young children and just wiping up)

  • alternative heat source (in case electricity goes out)

  • alternative cooking source - a grill, camping stove, etc. (again in case electricity goes out)

Find Supplies Inexpensively
First let me point out - you don't need to buy everything all at once. This is especially true if you're on a tight budget. Try to purchase a little bit here and there as your finances allow.

Start shopping at your local dollar store. I've been able to find an enamel cup, a Swiss army knife, batteries, candles, solar blanket and more. You can also find tools and kitchen items like a manual can opener. Next, search for items at your local grocery store. Check out the sale papers - some stores offer 10 for $10 sales. This is a great place to stock up on can goods, tuna, peanut butter, and the like. One obvious place to check out is your local discount store such as Wal-Mart, Target, Kmart to find camping supplies (in case your power goes out), oil lanterns, flashlights, etc. Don't forget to look in the clearance sections for great deals. However, the absolute best place to find something for your pantry is on Freecycle.org. You never know when someone is giving away something you actually need and can use.

By using a couple dollars a paycheck you can easily stock up your pantry in no time. Think about all those people who tried to live through Hurricane Katrina with very little food and water for days. It could be your family or mine next time. "Better to be safe than sorry!" It's better to be prepared and nothing happens, than to be totally unprepared.

What in the World is a "Go Bag"?

You're probably wondering "What in the world is a Go Bag?" It seems everyone is talking about it--from the morning news, government agencies and even kids television programs. Well a "Go Bag" is nothing more than a bag or tote full of everything you would need to survive in the event of an emergency.

You may be wondering why you even need a "Go Bag". Well some reasons include flooding, tornado, fire including forest fires, terrorist attack or any other reason causing you to flee your home temporarily or permanently.

You would want to include everything needed to help you start over in another location - just in case you can't return home. Some items to consider including are:

  • Original birth certificate or at least a copy
  • Copy of your deed and other important documents
  • Banking info - so you can notify your bank to address change, etc.
  • Copies of credit cards - same as above
  • Emergency contact numbers and addresses
  • At least one change of clothes - more if able
  • Weather related gear - if your area is prone to snow storms - pack gloves, hat, snow boots, etc.
  • Mess kit - a enamel cup, fork, spoon, etc.
  • Food - energy bars, protein bars, crackers, canned soup, tuna, etc. - more if possible.
  • Bottles of water
  • Important personal items - family photos, journals, etc.
  • Toys, coloring books, crayons, crossword puzzles, cards, etc. Something to relax you and your family during this stressful time.

As if losing your home, even for a short time, isn't bad enough. Imagine losing all your possessions. By having a "Go Bag" prepared and ready to go ahead of time in case of an emergency; you will hopefully have some items very important to you and your family.

Find Important Papers in
5 Minutes or Less

Would you know who to call if your credit card was stolen? Would you even know the card number?

Here are 3 very easy ways to find any important paperwork in 5 minutes or less.

1. A 3-ring binder
Either hole punch or buy sheet protectors. You can even put tabs to separate the sections ex. Owners' Manuals, Warranty info, insurance, automotive, etc.

2. A Box
It can be decorative or plain. Organized or not. It's just some place to put all your important papers that is easily accessible but contained.

3. A File Folder/Accordion File
This is really easy, but you would need a bookcase, file cabinet or something similar easily accessible. Otherwise the file would get in the way or end up with other items piled on top.

The whole point of putting all your important documents in one location is so you won't have to hunt and search for the information when you need it. If you keep it in an easily accessible location you can grab it as you head out the door during a fire, flood, etc. after all of your family is safely outside of course.

So the next time your washer breaks, the fridge isn't working or the air conditioner decides to stop cooling your house; you can find the right person to call quick, fast and in a hurry!
