Welcome!

Bring on the holiday shopping season :)    When my daughter and I visited our local mall on Wednesday morning we saw the stores were already hanging Christmas lights. Already!!!   I wonder when the Christmas tunes will start on the radio? Probably next week. This will be the first time in a long time I get to actually shop on Black Friday and I can't wait!

This month I've included 2 articles to help you plan ahead, stress less and actually enjoy this holiday season. Also included this month is an article about staying sane as a work at home mom.

Enjoy and have a wonderful month!

How to Stay Sane
on Turkey Day

Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Thanksgiving

Cooking a huge meal for over a dozen relatives and friends during the holidays is one of the most stressful challenges that the average home cook will undertake.

What's the key to keeping your sanity? Plan, plan, plan, then plan some more... Cook as much as possible 1 or 2 days ahead of time.

For the big day itself, I like to write out a timeline of the entire day. Why?

- You can avoid doing too much at once. Most Thanksgiving disasters occur because you have too much going on at once and you forget to tend to some dish at a crucial moment.

- You can see if your menu is feasible for your kitchen. You might find that you have too many dishes that use the oven, and you can't possibly cook everything in your kitchen.

So how do you do it? I like writing the timeline using Excel, but you can just use pencil and paper too.

1. Decide what dishes you want to make

When you're coming up with the menu, keep in mind the resources of your kitchen. Don't plan every dish for the oven. Think about whether you can fit 10 lbs of potatoes in your biggest pot; maybe you'll need two pots and two burners.

Write each dish down at the top of your timeline.

2. Figure out what can be done ahead

Cooking ahead is the number one way of making things easy on yourself on the big day. Write down the steps that can be done ahead of time on your timeline.

Stuff that can or should be done 2 days ahead:

- Cranberry Sauce (try making your own, it actually tastes good!)
- Pumpkin Pie
- Make turkey stock for gravy
- Start thawing the turkey (you might even need more than one day to thaw).

Stuff that can or should be done 1 day ahead:

- Make salad dressing
- Assemble stuffing and get it ready for baking the next day
- Mashed sweet potatoes (they keep very well)
- Cut vegetables for crudite
- Make dips
- A hearty Autumn soup (pumpkin, butternut squash)
- Make casseroles
- Bake bread or rolls
- Brine your turkey
- Clean your house, decorate, set the table...

3. Plan out the big day on the timeline

Make a column for each major cooking resource, each oven and each stove burner, and add another column for miscellaneous tasks.
Figure out when you want to serve dinner, and then plan the turkey around that time. If you're serving at 4pm, then you should take your turkey out of the oven at 3:30 (to give it time to rest), and put the turkey in at 12:30 to give it a 3 hour bake time. Mark these tasks on the timeline under the column for oven. These are just our examples, your cooking times will vary depending on the size of your bird.

Schedule your other dishes on the timeline under the kitchen resource they will be using up (range burner #2, oven #1, ...). Also, schedule miscellaneous steps (eg. peel and cut 10 lbs. potatoes) under the miscellaneous column.

Make sure that you don't give yourself too much to do with any given time slot. If you do, shift the recipes to a less busy time. During the actual cooking, the schedule often slips, so give yourself wiggle room between dishes just in case.

4. Re-evaluate your menu
When you filled out your entries, did you have trouble fitting things in? Were too many dishes using the same oven? You might need to plan more non-oven dishes. Be creative. There are recipes for butternut squash soup might make a good starter.

If you just have too many things packed into a time slot, you should try to plan more dishes that can be made the day before. Instead of baked sweet potatoes, maybe make a asparagus salad that can be prepped ahead of time and kept in the fridge.

5. Time to cook

For the days before Thanksgiving, just make sure that you do all the steps you've planned for your self. The exact timing isn't as important.

On the big day, just start following the timeline. At any given time, you can easily see what you're supposed to be doing by checking the row for the current time.

Now most importantly...

6. Have fun

I know all this planning sounds like a pain, but it doesn't really take much time to make a timeline, and it's much less painful than having a mental meltdown on Thanksgiving day.

The whole point of scheduling things out is so that you're not too busy at any given time. This way you can stay calm and have fun before and during the big meal. It's also so that you can be a good host. No one wants to watch you freak out on Thanksgiving. So don't worry and have fun! That's what it's all about...

Holiday Shopping - Tips for Surviving Black Friday

If you have ever been to a mall on the Friday following Thanksgiving, then you know all about "Black Friday". The biggest shopping day of the year was dubbed by this name because it is said to be the day that gets all of the stores out of the negative that they had been fighting through in the tough fall months. This is an exciting time for many shoppers, but it is a nightmare for many others. The sheer number of peoples that go to the malls is only outdone by the number of deals that are provided by retail stores. Here are some tips on how to make it through this shopping day alive.

Many shoppers will tell you that it is easier to attack Black Friday in a team. There are so many deals at so many stores that you won't ever be able to get to all of them on your own. Assemble a group of your friends and family to take advantage of all of the savings. Make a plan with your group and assign a set of stores and responsibilities to each member of the group. This way, everyone knows exactly what is expected of them during this hectic time.

Remember that shopping isn't just limited to the stores. Online shopping centers will also have deals on this day. Anyone who has ever shopped online during the holiday season can tell you that things on the internet are just as susceptible to getting picked over as things in the store. Because of that, you need to go about searching for the best deals over the internet as soon as Black Friday hits. If you fail to do this, you could find yourself wanting back ordered products come Christmas time.

Organization is a key when it comes to conquering Black Friday. This is an especially important tip for those people who are easily stressed out. The reality of this shopping day is that it is one of the most insanely hectic days of the year for everyone involved. Retail store owners are freaking out, while customers are running from store to store to make sure that they get the products they want. If you want to avoid this, you need to formulate and follow through with a plan. It is not enough to simply hope that this day will go well. You have to keep all of your shopping plans, wish lists, and deal coupons in an organized place. By doing this, you will be able to more effectively manage yourself and the shopping during the day.

Black Friday should be fun, so don't let it stress you out. If you follow these simple tips, then you should be able to take advantage of the day with little problem. If you are lucky enough to get to the malls early, you can find some excellent deals, so it's important to take advantage of this. In addition, you will want to get your hands on the hot items before everyone else does.

Stay Sane as a Work at Home Mom - Top 10 Ways

The other day, someone asked me what it's like to be a work at home mom. I just blinked back at him, my mind blank. How could I possibly describe life as a work at home mom? Only someone who's lived it can understand the juggling act it requires.

Work at home moms have the usual responsibilities of being a mom - folding laundry, scheduling doctor's appointments, helping with homework, reading bedtime stories, and basically being on call 24-hours a day. In addition, there is the conundrum of how to find time to work and answer emails, do networking, update bookkeeping, make phone calls, and more. And, it must fit into a 24 hour day. So, how do we do it? How do we stay sane in the chaos?

It's disclaimer time. I am not the person to give advice on sanity. I'm pretty sure I filed away my sanity last year when I did taxes. I have my days where I say "That's it! I'm getting a regular job!" But, then I talk to my wonderful friend who reminds me of the reality of the real world -- the traffic, the boss who won't let me go to my son's field trip, and the fact that I'd probably have to buy pantyhose again. She manages to slap some sense back into me every time. I hate pantyhose.

Working from home the last few years, I've picked up a few handy tips. They aren't magic beans, that, when planted, will grow you a nanny and a housekeeper, but they can help you to enjoy being a work at home mom just a little bit more.

10. Freezer Cooking! This is my personal life-saver. Spend one day during the week or one day each month assembling meals and your reward is a freezer filled with food. Then, when it's time to make dinner, just grab a healthful, inexpensive meal from your freezer, heat it up and serve. Think about it. Next time you cook dinner, quadruple the recipe and put what you don't eat into the freezer for later. Presto! Magic food will appear in your freezer the next time you need it.

9. Pay it Forward- By helping others, it reminds us that many of our own problems are much smaller than they appear. Whether you donate money, give blood, or volunteer your time, you are setting a beautiful example for your children. Involve your older kids and make volunteering a family activity.

8. Stay Healthy - Dust off your rollerblades, strap a pillow across your bottom and hit the pavement. Or surprise your children and the dog with a nice long walk.

7. Organize, organize, organize! If you're spending hours each week sorting through piles of paper, looking for receipts or "to do" lists, that is wasted time and unnecessary frustration. Sweep the Magic 8 ball, the empty jar of peanuts, the Slinky, and the Snickers wrapper off your desk right now. You can do it!

6. Save Money - As Benjamin Franklin wrote in Poor Richard's Almanac "A penny saved is a penny earned." Work at home moms know how hard it can be to earn a penny. So, do everything you can to save those hard-earned cents.

5. Time Management - Don't let Time Stealers make you work any longer than you need to. When you're sitting in front of your computer or talking on the phone, that is time away from your children. Always remember your "why". WHY are you working from home? If the reason is to spend more time with your kids, then figure out how to make that happen!

4. Learn and Learn some More! - Find a mentor or someone who you like the way they handle their business. Network with other moms who are successful, take online classes, or hire a coach. Invest in yourself and you'll invest in your business.

3. Play with your Kids - Whether you sit down to play a board game, or drive Hot Wheels around the carpet, there's always fun to be had. If you need some ideas, check out http://www.ShowKidsTheFun.com

2. Keep your sense of humor. Laugh every day! Turn off your computer, put in your copy of The Village People "YMCA" (I know you have one) and Dance! Dance! Dance! and the number one way to stay sane as a Work at Home Mom .....

1. Always remember "The days are long, but the years are short." Although it oftentimes feels like the days drag by as a work at home mom, remember that the years are flying by. It's that reminder that keeps me grounded on days when the projects are heavy and the beach is calling.

If you're looking for me, you can find me at the beach!
